Innovation in healthcare: A look behind the scenes – Morgen:Rapport
October 9, 2024
The latest episode of our podcast "Morgen:Rapport" is all about innovation in the healthcare sector. The episode was recorded live in front of an audience in a yurt in the park on Zollikerberg. Despite the rain pelting down on the roof, we had an inspiring discussion with our guests Josephine Ritzel and Lui Unterassner from the Health Innovation Hub at the University Hospital Zurich. The interview was conducted by Jean-Daniel Strub, ethicist at Gesundheitswelt Zollikerberg.
What does innovation mean in the healthcare sector?
Innovation is widely recognised as an indispensable tool for meeting the key needs of patients even more effectively and improving products and processes in the healthcare sector in the long term. Promoting innovation is therefore also very important in the medical field and in clinical contexts. For Josephine Ritzel and Lui Unterassner, it is crucial that innovations meet the actual needs of patients. They emphasise the importance of "unmet medical needs" and the need to be able to identify and promote new therapeutic approaches in research at an early stage.
The role of the Health Innovation Hub
The Health Innovation Hub at the University Hospital Zurich is a pioneering institution that supports researchers in bringing their ideas and findings to market maturity in the form of start-up companies, thereby contributing to real improvements for patients and practitioners. Here, ideas from research are transformed into marketable products and services. One example is a start-up that deals with the early detection of breast cancer using artificial intelligence. Such innovations have the potential to significantly improve the quality of medical care.
Challenges and opportunities
The discussion also highlighted the challenges faced by innovators in the healthcare sector. Long development cycles and strict regulatory requirements are just some of the hurdles. Nevertheless, Josephine and Lui are optimistic that many promising projects can be realised with targeted funding and support.
Future prospects
The outlook for the future shows that artificial intelligence in particular has great potential to revolutionise medical care. From improved image analysis to personalised medicine - the possibilities are manifold.

And yet it is often difficult to truly live up to the expectation of participation. Why is that? What approaches to genuine participation exist, and what do they entail? And which successful models from abroad could inspire Switzerland, so that patient involvement becomes the norm here too?
