Before the vast majority of endoscopies, we will give you a sedative (sleeping pill), usually Disoprivan (Propofol®). This means that the examinations are usually not unpleasant. Exceptions are the endoscopies of the rectum/proctoscopies, which are occasionally carried out with you awake, as they take a very short time. Your vital signs are monitored during the examinations to ensure that you are always well. Anaesthetic incidents are extremely rare; an anaesthesia team is always on site in the event of an emergency.

• If a sleeping pill is administered for a gastroscopy, you must appear fasting, i.e. you must not have eaten for six hours; still water is permitted up to two hours before the examination. You will receive precise instructions together with our written instructions.
• If a colonoscopy is carried out, you will receive precise instructions (including a precise diet) and a prescription for a laxative in good time. It is important that you follow these instructions exactly so that the colonoscopy can be carried out correctly. The laxative should be drunk at least two to three hours before the examination.

In contrast to earlier sleeping pills, you will wake up very quickly at the end of the examination after administration of the sleeping pill Disoprivan (Propofol®, see above); however, you must not drive a vehicle or operate machinery on the same day. You will be given enough time to fully recover. In the follow-up consultation, the medical team will inform you about the findings and the next steps. You will receive a copy of the examination report in the following days.
